- Scheduled for opening in May 2010, the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is the first airport built in the U.S. since 9/11. It replaces the existing airport that was built on the east side of the bay in 1948. With a main runway length of 10,000 feet, the airport will be able to accommodate most of the world’s largest planes, and a full U S. customs operation opens the door for international carriers to fly directly to the region. Southwest Airlines, the nation’s largest domestic carrier, will begin flights to and from four U.S. cities in May.

The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is the first “green” airport built in the country, and the 120,000 square foot terminal is being built to LEEDS standards with extensive use of sustainable materials.
